Cleaning A Glock 17 - When a friend recently conducted a firearms inspection in his department, he was disappointed to find that most of his officers were not doing their job properly with firearms. To help solve this problem, let's talk about what you need to do to keep your Glock pistol in good condition.

Cleaning a firearm begins with the safe disassembly of the gun. For instructions on how to do this, see your user manual and/or your department's instructions.

To ensure reliability, it is important to keep the supply ramp clean. All this rubbish must be removed so that your cartridge can freely enter the chamber.

The area behind the extractor hook must be kept clean to avoid misfeeds and extractions. You will need to periodically disassemble the slide to deep clean this area, but you can get the job done without disassembly if you are careful.

The surface of the breech must be clean and smooth to ensure reliable feeding. Remove the cooked porridge from there.

Slide rails must be cleaned for reliability. It's easiest if you use a brush to get there.

Dirt collects on the frame guides and must be cleaned so that the guide can move without excessive friction. Don't forget you have two in the front and two in the back - clear them all. These are the rear spars, right and left (upper and lower, in the photo)

When you wipe the slide, hold it by the muzzle to prevent more solvent and debris from seeping into the slide. If solvent and oil collect inside, they can form a sticky residue that will prevent your gun from working properly.

Wipe down your magazines on the outside, focus on getting a follower, and feed your lips with any trash. From time to time you will want to parse your logs to clear the contents, but this is not necessary every time.

Wipe the recoil spring assembly clean and dry. The extra oil will attract dirt here and is not necessary.

Clean larger items off the frame with a rag, then go back to clean the parts with a brush and another clean rag or band-aid. This area at the rear contains your ejector, trigger and connector, as well as the rear frame rails.

Use a rag to clean the stop block area and front rail to keep them clean and dry.

It is difficult to clean the guides with one finger and a rag. Use a tool to insert the patch into the groove and drag it along the entire length of the rail to remove the dirt.

You can clean the area behind the extractor hook with a toothpick or "brush" it with a band-aid. Just make sure you don't leave anything behind - this place should be clean and dry.

If you need to clean the breech surface to keep it clean, do it with the muzzle down to limit the amount of leakage inside the bolt.

Once the parts have been cleaned to your specifications, lubricate and reassemble the gun. Be careful with oil because there is not enough oil to ensure proper operation and any excess will only attract dirt. Also, excess oil will coagulate and form a sticky residue that can damage the reliability of your gun.

A small drop of oil should be placed where the trigger cam meets the connector.

Place a small drop of oil near the muzzle and rub it around the barrel with your finger.

A small drop of oil on the locking tab is also appropriate. Rub it into the ear with your finger to distribute.

Do a "tinkle test" to make sure your attacker is moving freely. While holding the striker safety plunger down, rock the bolt back and forth. You should hear and feel the movement of the attacker in your channel. If not, you will need to disassemble the bolt and clean the bore and striker components.

Once the gun is lubricated and assembled, perform a function check to ensure the system is working properly.

After completing the functional test, go to the place where your ammunition is stored and say to yourself: "Enough practice, COMBAT MODE." This may sound a little silly, but it helps to establish that a difficult mental break is needed to prevent another "dry fire" from inadvertently spilling.

Prepare magazines with cartridges and load the pistol. Put your pistol in a holster and magazines in pouches and secure your gear. Resist the temptation to do a last-second cleaning or inspection while you put away your gear, because this is where accidents happen.
